Cannons to Host Lizards in Home Opener
For their first game of the 2011 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) season, the Boston Cannons will host the Long Island Lizards at Harvard Stadium on Saturday, May 14 at 7 pm.
As we look back on this match up, the Cannons have just prevailed over the Lizards with an all time record of 14-13. The rivalry between these two teams extends into the 2011 season in which they will meet three times, twice in Boston. In their last meeting of the 2010 season, the Cannons put on a spectacular second half and pulled off the win after a 13-5 half time deficit. In the end, the Lizards were handed the loss as the Cannons pulled away with a 17-14 win. This year we look forward to watching these two teams face off once again.
Last year, the Cannons ended the regular season with a 6-3 record, winning all four home games while struggling on the road. The Cannons faced off in a tough semi-final game against the Chesapeake Bayhawks which resulted in their last game of the 2010 season as they fell 13-9 to the Bayhawks. Chesapeake moved on to become the 2010 MLL champions.
The team looks strong this year as the Cannons welcome back Matt Poskay and Paul Rabil, the 2010 and 2009 Bud Light MLL Most Valuable Players, respectively. Poskay earned a total of 52 points last season while also leading the team with 45 goals. Rabil was close behind with 21 goals, 10 assists and a total of 37 points. Rabil, who also plays with the Washington Stealth of NLL, will be missing on Saturday’s game to play for the NLL championship. He’ll make his Harvard debut next Saturday, May 21 vs the Denver Outlaws.
The Cannons also look at some possible milestones for 2011:
The Lizards have not won in Boston since 2009 and look for revenge as they start their season on the road. After falling short last year in the championship game against the Chesapeake Bayhawks, the Lizards have been given a tough schedule and will travel to Boston two times this season with the Cannons heading to Long Island once. Matt Danowski and Tim Goettelmann are two players to watch this season for the Lizards. Last year, Danowski and Goettelmann combined for 46 goals while Danowski also tallied up 18 assists for a total of 47 points.
Saturday’s game start will be 7 pm with the lots and ticket office opening at 3 pm. The fan zone will be available starting at 5 pm while the gates will open one hour before face off.
