The Boston Cannons can clinch a spot in Championship Weekend when they travel to Long Island on Saturday night to finish up a  four game road trip.

The Boston Cannons (6-1) took sole possession of first place in Major League Lacrosse standings after their big win against the Denver Outlaws (5-2) on July 3rd. The Cannons entered the game knowing they needed to grab this win in order to clinch a spot in Championship weekend. Not only were the Cannons able to win their fifth straight game, they did so on the road in front of a record-breaking MLL crowd of 27,184 fans.

Along with being the number one team in the league, Boston also boasts some of the top players. Midfielder Paul Rabil currently leads the league with 33 points on the season and is tied for first with 18 goals. In his career, Rabil totals 157 points, 96 goals, 19 two point goals and 42 assists. Rabil was also named Major League Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Four other Cannons also round up the top 10 players for total points this season. Brad Ross has shown great strength as a middie this season with 21 points, including three 2-point goals, while Max Quinzani, a local player from Duxbury, has tallied 20 total points. At 19 points each, Ryan Boyle and Matt Poskay have also contributed offensively with 9 and 17 goals, respectively.

The Cannons travel to Long Island for their fourth game on the road prior to returning to Harvard Stadium on July 23rd. The Lizards (2-5) have had a tough time this season and are entering this game against the Cannons with some hesitation. Long Island has suffered another two losses to the Outlaws and Nationals, losing some hope in this season. Despite these losses, Midfielder Stephen Berger and Attackman Matt Danowski have been leading the team on offense. Danowski has 23 points on the season, which leads the Lizards, while Berger and midfielder Stephen Peyser have 18 points apiece.

With only one loss on the season, the Cannons have been unstoppable all around. Goalie Jordan Burke has stepped it up in the net, currently leading all goalies with a 10.17 goal against average and a .617 save percentage. The Cannons have pushed their opponents offensively, breaking down everyone’s defense in order to find the back of the net. In their last game against the Outlaws, the Cannons shot 14 goals past goalie Jesse Schwartzman with Ross and Rabil combining for six.

Boston looks to keep their spot atop the league as they travel to face the Lizards for the third time this season. Fans can catch the game live on Comcast SportsNet NE at 8:00pm or on ESPN3.com  Be sure to also check out our Facebook and Twitter pages for more exciting game coverage.
