Cannons vs Hounds Preview

This Saturday, the Boston Cannons will host the Charlotte Hounds in the first-ever meeting between the two franchises. The Cannons look to ride their momentum, while the Hounds seek their first win in Major League Lacrosse.

Last week the Cannons set a Major League Lacrosse record by only allowing three goals (the previous record was five goals allowed) in their 15-3 rout of the Rochester Rattlers. Goalie Jordan Burke earned MLL Defensive Player of the Week honors for his 17-save performance.

Jake Beebe, Ari Sussman, Paul Rabil and Ryan Boyle led the way on the offensive side of the field. Beebe’s four goals earned him Bud Light Player of the Game in his MLL debut. Sussman added four goals in his first start as a Cannon. Reigning MLL MVP Rabil tallied three goals and recorded five helpers for a league-leading eight points. Boyle assumed his usual role as field general, pitching in four assists.

The Hounds struggled in their season opener, dropping a 21-12 contest to the Denver Outlaws. Four-time MLL All-Star Stephen Berger led the Hounds with four goals and two assists. Billy Bitter (UNC ’11), Jovan Miller (Syracuse ’11), Brian Carroll (UVA ’10), Josh Amidon (Syracuse ’11) and Jeremy Boltus (Army ’11) provide the Hounds with young legs and create an offensive threat.

"They're good," said Cannons head coach Steve Duffy. "They gave up a lot of goals last week, but they'll correct that. They have a number of offensive weapons, which will be a different challenge for us this week."

What to look for:

Poskay returns: 2010 MLL MVP Matt Poskay is expected to return to the Cannons line-up. Poskay has led the team in goals the past two summers with 30 in 2011 and 45 in 2010.

Face-offs: Chris Eck (11-for-20 in Week 1) will match up against a struggling face-off unit. Corey Bulken (11-for-21) and Andrew Spark (1-for-11) were outmatched last week against the Outlaws.

Charlotte goalies: Adam Ghitelman started for the Hounds last week, but was pulled after 43 minutes, 14 goals allowed and four 2-point goals allowed. Joe Marra, a 2011 MLL All-Star, allowed three goals in 16 minutes of relief.

Tickets can be purchased at or by calling the Cannons office at 617-746-9933. Parking lots open at 3:00 pm, the Fan Zone opens at 5:00 pm and face-off is set for 7:00 pm.
