Cannons in the NLL


The Cannons playing in the NLL wrapped up their 2011 regular seasons this weekend with five of the players qualifying for the playoffs.

The Boston Blazers finished their regular season in Buffalo in a preview of the first round of the playoffs. Kevin Buchanan was the star of the game notching an impressive five goals and four assists on his way to being named game MVP in a 16-9 win. Jack Reid and Greg Downing also got on the score board with Reid picking up a goal while Downing notched an assist. Mitch Belisle had an impressive game in defense, picking up seven loose balls.

The Blazers will be hoping to the same result when then take on Buffalo during the weekend beginning April 29. The NLL will announce its playoff schedule at a later date.

Paul Rabil and the Washington Stealth ended their season at home, losing to the Rochester Knighthawks 18-10. Rabil scored a goal and an assist during the game while also picking up eight loose balls.

The defending champion Stealth will face off against the Minnesota Swarm in the first round of the playoffs. If the Swarm win their last game of the regular season on Saturday they will be the two seed. But if Minnesota loses, the Stealth will be the two seed and get home field advantage in the first round.

The Philadelphia Wings ended their season with an 11-9 loss to the Swarm in Minnesota. Ryan Boyle notched his second hat trick of the year while also picking up an assist. Philadelphia had been just one game outside of a playoff spot two weeks ago but back to back losses have seen the Wings miss out on the post season.

Kyle Sweeney and the Edmonton Rush ended their season on a high note, defeating the Toronto Rock 18-14. Sweeney continued his strong play since joining the Rush in the middle of the season, scoring two assists and picking up two loose balls. The storyline of this game was Toronto goalie Bob Watson making his 6,465th save three minutes in tothe fourth quarter to set the all time saves record in the NLL.
