BOSTON, MA – (April 29, 2014) The Cannons have started off on the right foot in 2014 with a win in their home opener. In the Cannons’ season opener Sunday, offseason moves translated into immediate on-field success as the Cannons beat the defending MLL champions, Chesapeake Bayhawks, 15-9.

The Cannons now travel to Rochester, NY to face the Rattlers for their first road trip of the season this Friday, May 2nd at 7:30pm. The Rattlers are looking for their first win of the season in their home opener after falling to the NY Lizards 18-15 last week.

In the offensive end on Sunday, five players scored for the Cannons, led by veteran Kevin Buchanan, who had seven goals and was named the MLL Warrior Offensive Player of the week. Will Manny added a hat trick and two assists, Paul Rabil had two goals and three assists, and Stephen Berger also scored twice.

On the defensive end, six-time Major League Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year, Brodie Merrill made an immediate impact, collecting 5 ground balls, joining Cannons Goalie Jordan Burke, who had 15 saves, in controlling the vaunted Chesapeake offensive attack.

Both teams struggled to find the back of the net early with Kevin Buchanan breaking the scoreless tie just over 9 minutes into the contest with his first of 7 goals on the night.  The Cannons outscored Chesapeake 10-5 over the 2nd and 3rd quarters to put the game out of reach.  A late flurry of four goals from Chesapeake cut the score to 14-9 before Will Manny capped off the game scoring to make the final 15-9.

Justin Turri and Dan Hardy shined for Rochester in their week 1 loss at New York.  Turri scored 3 goals and tallied 2 assists, while Dan Hardy added 4 goals. Rattlers goalie, John Galloway, had 18 saves on the day. It was an up-tempo game from the beginning as the two teams combined for 13 goals in the first quarter.  New York scored 7 straight goals to start the second half and created a lead they would never relinquish.

Rochester swept the season series last season, defeating the Cannons 16-14 on June 7 in a game played in Atlanta, GA and 23-14 in Boston on August 10.  In the first match-up the Cannons led most of the contest before the late surge from Rattlers, outscoring the Cannons 5-1 in the 4th quarter.  It was a balanced attack from Rochester as 8 different players found the back of the net.  Paul Rabil led the Cannons with 2 goals and 2 assists.

In the last meeting of the season, the Cannons allowed a season high 23 goals in the 23-14 loss at home in the regular season finale. Matt Striebel (traded to NY in the off-season) led Rochester with 7 points including three 2-point goals.  Dave Lawson added 3 goals and 2 assists for the visitors.   Will Manny and Paul Rabil led the Cannons offense for the night.  Manny scored 4 goals, while Rabil tallied 2 goals and added 3 assists.

Boston looks to bring their overall record against Rochester to 11-12 and are hungry for their second win in 2014.
